You may not know this, but your hearing and balance are connected. If you are having balance issues or suffering from vestibular dysfunction, an audiologist may be able to offer an assessment and treatment as well as provide needed rehabilitation. At inTouch Hearing our audiologist focuses on providing a treatment that is customized and patient-centered. We can identify, diagnose, and treat hearing, balance, and other auditory issues for all ages. We work closely with your family physician and our treatments are always evidence-based and tailored to fit your specific needs. We test for balance disorders in our Barrie and Newmarket offices.
Treatment can include:
Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT)
VRT uses specific head, body, and eye exercises designed to retrain the brain to recognize and process signals from the vestibular system and coordinate them with information from vision. The choice and form of VRT exercises will differ from person to person.
Canalith repositioning maneuvers (e.g., the Epley maneuver)
A specialized form of VRT is available to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This treatment is often referred to as the Epley maneuver, and involves a series of specifically patterned head and trunk movements to move tiny crystals which have formed in the inner ear. Through this treatment, the crystals are moved to areas where they can’t cause symptoms like dizziness and/or nausea.
The complexity of balance disorders goes beyond just medical or physical concerns. It can also have psychological, social, educational, and employment implications. Our audiologist will help guide you and your family through the recovery process in order to minimize any negative impact the balance disorder may cause. In this way, we hope to not only improve your balance, but your quality of life.
